Scandinavian Christmas Cushions to Cross Stitch: 13 Patterns from Hessian to Linen

WREATH mistletoe Christmas cross stitch cushion on a sofa – pattern by Anette Eriksson

There is something quietly lovely about a Scandinavian Christmas – red berries against pale linen, the scent of pine, the texture of natural hessian under your fingertips. Whether your December means a warm evening on the verandah or a crisp afternoon walk before you settle in to stitch, these designs bring that same unhurried Nordic feeling into your home.

Stitching a cushion takes time, and that is the point. A cushion made by your own hands brings something warm and lasting to a room – and it comes out again, year after year.

You will find the full range in my Scandinavian Christmas needlework collection. Below, I have grouped thirteen cushion designs by fabric – hessian, aida and linen – so you can choose the one that suits both your experience and the look you are after.

Choosing your fabric: aida, linen or hessian

14ct aida is the natural starting point. The woven grid makes it easy to count and place your stitches, and the firm weave holds its shape. If you are new to cross stitch, this is where I would begin.

28ct linen is stitched over two threads, which gives a stitch size comparable to 14ct aida – so the finished size stays the same, but the fabric has a softer, more natural drape.

Hessian (burlap) is a different experience altogether – rustic, natural and wonderfully textural, and just right for a Scandi-style home. Hessian frays, so secure the edges before you start stitching. My guide on how to stitch on burlap walks you through it.

Rustic on hessian

These designs were made for hessian – earthy and full of character. All of them except BEACH CHRISTMAS can also be stitched on 14ct aida if you prefer a crisper result.

REINDEER is easy for beginners and comes with DMC colour keys for two different options – a gentle way to try hessian, or stitch it on 14ct aida or 28ct linen instead.
Fabric: hessian, 14ct aida or 28ct linen · finished cushion 40×40 cm

LINGONBERRY brings the red berries of the Nordic forest to natural cloth – very much the spirit of a Scandinavian Christmas.
Fabric: hessian or 14ct white aida · design 38×45 cm · finished cushion 50×50 cm

GREEN PINE keeps things simple and graphic.
Fabric: hessian or 14ct white aida · design 28×37 cm · finished cushion 45×45 cm

PINE WREATH is a calm, classic centrepiece.
Fabric: hessian or 14ct white aida · design 37×37 cm · finished cushion 45×45 cm

SCANDI PINE is the most minimalist of the group – made for a modern Scandi interior.
Fabric: 12ct hessian or 14ct aida · finished size 43×43 cm

SANTA, SCANDI COUNTRY, CHRISTMAS CHARM and WINTER FOREST are my four newest Christmas designs, each with its own personality and the same Nordic charm.

  • SANTA · hessian or 14ct aida · finished size 35×35 cm
  • SCANDI COUNTRY · hessian or 14ct aida · finished size 35×35 cm
  • CHRISTMAS CHARM · hessian or 14ct aida · finished size 30×35 cm
  • WINTER FOREST · hessian or 14ct aida · finished size 28×35 cm

And then there is BEACH CHRISTMAS – made for the beach house and a southern-hemisphere December.
Fabric: hessian · finished size 43×60 cm

Crisp on aida

Aida gives clean, defined stitches – well suited to graphic designs where every square counts.

FAIRISLE STAGS has a lovely Scandinavian look and is easy to stitch. The pattern comes with both a colour chart and a black-and-white chart, plus DMC colour keys for two different options.
Fabric: 14ct aida · 170×170 stitches · finished cushion 40×40 cm

WREATH – a mistletoe wreath for a little Swedish Christmas at home – works on aida or linen. On aida the motif is crisp and graphic; on linen it softens.
Fabric: 14ct aida or 28ct linen · finished cushion 40×40 cm

Delicate on linen

Linen rewards the stitcher who enjoys working slowly. WREATH (above) sits comfortably here too.

SNOW STAR is stitched in white and silver on 28ct linen – restful and quietly striking, a classic to bring out every year.
Fabric: 28ct linen · 115×135 stitches · finished cushion 40×40 cm

From stitched panel to finished cushion

Every pattern in this post includes a tutorial for making a simple slipcover cushion cover, so you can go straight from the last stitch to a finished cushion on the sofa.

Most of the hessian patterns also include a tutorial on stitching on hessian – worth reading before you cut your fabric.

All the patterns are instant-download PDFs with a chart and a DMC colour key, so you can gather your threads and begin straight away.

Where to start

If I had to choose: REINDEER for a first project, SNOW STAR for a quieter, slower stitch, and BEACH CHRISTMAS for a southern-hemisphere home. You can see every design together in all Christmas cross stitch patterns.

Whatever you choose, I hope it brings you some unhurried making time in the weeks ahead.

Happy Stitching!
Anette
