How to Stitch on Burlap: Bring Rustic Texture to Your Embroidery
If you’ve ever worked with traditional aida or linen, stitching on burlap (also known as hessian or jute) might feel a little unfamiliar at first. The material is raw, uneven, and wonderfully full of character — and that’s exactly what makes it special.
In my designs, I often choose burlap to give embroidery a modern, contemporary twist. It adds a rustic, handcrafted charm that pairs beautifully with today’s home décor trends — especially for cushions, wall art, and pillow covers.
Once you’ve made a few stitches, you’ll quickly get used to the texture and rhythm of working with this beautiful natural fabric. Here’s a short guide to get you started.
🧵 1. Half Cross Stitch Over 2 Threads
This technique gives a bold, textured finish — perfect for larger designs or chunky styles.
Use 8-ply or double-knit knitting wool, or DMC tapestry wool for a soft yet full-bodied stitch.

✨ 2. Half Cross Stitch Over 1 Thread
For finer details or smaller motifs, stitch over one thread.
Use DMC stranded cotton (full thread, no splitting) — or try 3–4 ply cotton or baby wool for a delicate touch.

💫 3. Cross Stitch Over 1 Thread
For more traditional cross stitch results, split your embroidery floss and use two strands.
This creates a slightly raised, refined texture that contrasts beautifully with the raw weave of the burlap.

Working with burlap takes a little patience — but it rewards you with texture, warmth, and a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic. Each piece you create will have its own unique character, shaped by both your hand and the fabric’s natural weave.
