This long cardigan is knitted in simple stocking stitch, which makes it suitable for beginners. I have kept the shaping straightforward: garter stitch edges at the sides and along the front bands, and a split at each side seam.

Everything is worked flat in pieces. The back, two fronts and two sleeves are knitted separately and sewn together at the end. The shoulders are shaped on the diagonal, and the garter stitch front bands continue up to the back of the neck, where they are sewn in place.

The pattern includes a short guide to knitting a tension square and a stitch guide, so you can check your tension before you begin and see each stitch explained.

Good to know:

Construction - worked flat in pieces (back, two fronts and two sleeves) and sewn together
Substituting yarn - any yarn that knits to 16 sts x 20 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch
