Every wardrobe needs one of these, and this is the pattern to knit it from. There is nothing to distract you — plain stocking stitch body, rib at the edges, a roll neck picked up at the end — so it is a good first sweater and equally good television knitting once you have made a few. The fit is relaxed rather than fitted, the sleeves are set in, and in Scandi Soft XL on 6 mm needles the whole thing takes four to six balls.

Good to know

• Construction – worked bottom up: front, back and sleeves knitted flat and sewn together, with 2×2 rib on 5 mm needles at the hem and cuffs and the roll neck picked up at the end.
• You will also need – 6 mm needles and 5 mm needles for the rib. The pattern is written for Scandi Soft XL (100 g): 4–6 balls depending on size. Using another yarn? Any chunky yarn that knits to 16 sts × 20 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
