Vilja is the pattern I give to anyone who has never knitted a sweater. There are only two pieces, and each one is garter stitch from start to finish – no purling, and no shaping beyond the sleeves and the V at the front. The sleeves grow out of the body as you knit, so there is nothing to set in: you sew the shoulders and the sides, and crochet one row around the neck and cuffs to finish. It is one size and cut generously, so it falls loose and easy whether you wear it over a dress or with wide trousers.

Good to know

• Construction – back and front are knitted flat in garter stitch, with the sleeves cast on at the sides as you go. Sew the shoulders, sides and underarms, then crochet one row of double crochet (US single crochet) around the neck and sleeves.
• You will also need – 7 mm needles and an 8 mm crochet hook. The pattern is written for Scandi Cotton XL (200 g ≈ 240 m): 3 balls, approx. 720 m. Using another yarn? Any chunky cotton that knits to 13 sts × 20 rows over 10 cm in garter stitch.
