Svala takes the classic Breton stripe and gives it texture. The stripes on the front alternate plain stocking stitch in ecru with double moss stitch in denim, so the colour and the surface change together, and a single stripe crosses each sleeve to tie it together. The back stays plain. The roll neck is a long 2×2 rib, cast off in pattern so it stays elastic, and it folds down softly or stands up against the wind. Cotton keeps it light enough to wear most of the year.

Good to know

• Construction – front, back and sleeves are knitted flat and sewn together, with 2×2 rib at the hems and cuffs. The stripes are 5 cm each: ecru in stocking stitch, denim in double moss stitch. The collar is picked up on a 5 mm circular needle and knitted in rib to 20 cm.
• You will also need – 5 mm and 6 mm needles and a 5 mm circular needle for the collar. The pattern is written for Scandi Cotton XL (200 g ≈ 240 m): 1 ball of the stripe colour and 3–5 balls of the main colour. Using another yarn? Any chunky cotton that knits to 15 sts × 19 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
