The texture comes from one very simple idea: row one is knit one, purl one; row two is knit two, purl two; row three is knit three, purl three, and so on, adding a stitch every row until the row is all knit — then you start again. Nothing to chart, nothing to count twice, and the fabric shifts under your hands into wide diagonal bands. Because the front pieces have fewer stitches than the back, the texture lands differently there, which is part of the charm. The bands are worked in garter stitch as you go, with buttonholes spaced along the right front.

Good to know

• Construction – back, two fronts and balloon sleeves are knitted flat and sewn together. The seven-stitch front bands are worked in garter stitch as part of each front piece, with buttonholes about every 8–10 cm on the right band. 2×2 rib at the hem and cuffs.
• You will also need – 5 mm needles, 4 mm needles for the sleeve rib, and buttons for the front band. The pattern is written for Scandi Cotton (100 g): 5–7 balls depending on size. Using another yarn? Any 8 ply cotton that knits to 21 sts × 28 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
