Embla is the pattern people come back to. There is no shaping to speak of — front and back are straight rectangles until the armholes — so the whole thing is carried by the double moss stitch, which gives cotton a bit of body and stops the fabric hanging limp. It takes three to five balls and a couple of evenings, which is why it works so well as a first garment. In a bright shade it becomes the piece you reach for over shorts all summer.

Good to know

• Construction – front, back and short sleeves are knitted flat in double moss stitch and sewn together, with 4 stitches cast off at each side for the armhole.
• You will also need – 5 mm needles. The pattern is written for Scandi Cotton (100 g): 3–5 balls depending on size. Using another yarn? Any 8 ply cotton that knits to 17 sts × 22 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
