Cables are at their best on something you can see all at once, and a throw gives them room. The same cable panel runs through both pieces, so you can knit the cushion first as a sample and move on to the throw with the pattern already in your hands. There is no size to fit and no shaping, which makes this a good way to learn cables. The pattern also includes a simple tutorial for a slipcover, so you can back the cushion in hessian and keep it in shape.

Good to know

• Construction – the cushion is knitted flat to 47 cm; the throw is cast on 221 stitches, best worked back and forth on a long circular needle, and knitted to 150 cm. A knitted back for the cushion needs about 200 g extra.
• You will also need – 6 mm needles and a cable needle. Any yarn that knits to 17 sts × 22 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch — Scandi Cotton or a soft 8 ply wool both work.
